  • Too ripe for me.  I like bananas with lots of green left.
  • So, they splurged and bought a 3-pack of $10 bananas for... $50?

Somewhere, a Japanese couple is cackling maniacally that a nutty journalist actually fell for it.

I've always wondered where this GIF came from:

It still makes no sense, but thank you for the effort.

In fairness, journalists didn't fall for sh*t - that would be paid by the publisher.

Journalists don't make enough money to spend $50 on anything.
  • It's strange that often in Japan, imported goods are cheaper than domestic ones. It's seems like the reasoning is one part quality (perceived or real) and one part national pride, and maybe a splash of logistics chicanery. The bread flour I get comes from Hokkaido and is nearly twice the price of the imported from Canada/US stuff sold by the same company. The Hokkaido wheat is worth it, though. It's not always the case that the domestic is more expensive, but it is a regular occurrence especially with fruit/veg/meat.

Also, Japanese retailers don't always do value packs.

Ashi Beer, for example. A 500ml is more expensive than a 350 ml, but the per ml of beer is cheaper. Bulk rate, yeah? No. The 1000ml and 2000ml cans actually cost more per ml than the same amount in 500ml cans. No discount there.

I would not be surprised if they charged more for the three pack for some reason than three singles.
  • Ever notice that artificial banana flavoring doesn't taste much like a banana? Apparently, bananas Used to taste like that. There was a crop disease that devastated that cultivar, and it was replaced by the cavendish banana we see in supermarkets today.

The Japanese banana isn't just a cavendish grown in Japan, it's a different and rare cultivar. Honestly I could see people spending some money to try one.

The three bananas come wrapped in a silk bag and packed in a special box lined with hay. You are paying for presentation.

OT.  I was on the North Shore and there was a road side stand selling Kahuku sweet corn $5 for 8 ears.  So I tell the lady that I'd like to buy some but don't need 8 ears.  So she says ok, 4 ears for $2. Sold

    /shoulda bought two bags
