I think this kind of auction is winner take all, losers go home. If the winner doesn't pony up, it gets put up for auction again or taken down at the discretion of the seller.
Donated by Goodwill of Southern and Western Colorado. I'm guessing someone who volunteers there REALLY doesn't want to let it go.

There's a massive shortage of half-way decent cards right now.
The AMD RX 580 I paid $200 for when it came out 4 years ago years ago are now selling for $500-$700 new.
You won't find a single VR-capable card for less than $500.
Pretty much the only way to get a high-end card at the moment is to buy a gaming PC that has one included, or pay 4-5 times the MSRP to a scalper. Every last retail card is scooped up by the bitcoin miners the second it is listed for sale, both online and in the stores.

Bitcoin miners use specialized ASIC hardware, not GPUs. Those are for Ethereum and other miscellaneous altcoins.

I've been signed up with multiple retailers for notifications for a couple of months now, so far with zero results.

Yes it can. I had an 8800 GT (not even a GTX) and I was able to run Crysis just fine. It's still basically useless for modern gaming though. That card was a best in it's day though.

That's precisely why I'm hanging on to my spare GPUs. I have a GTX 560 and a GTX 970, and I could probably get more for that 970 than what I paid for it 3 years ago. But I don't want to end up dead in the water if something should happen to my current GPU, not in this current market.

I bought a 1080ti from some kid on eBay for $650 a couple years ago. I sold that 1080ti for $1000. It paid for the 3080 a friend of mine picked up for me and sold to me retail.
I also sold my old 1060 for $300. It's nuts out there right now.

I've had a couple 2gb ddr5 cards that I've held onto for emergency use if I need to get by with them. I bought them in 2013 for $90. People are still trying to get ~$75 for em. I did use one of them for months after I sold my 1080ti and I have it in a PC I threw together for work right now. Would have went the APU route and skipped on the gpu altogether but those prices were driven up last year as well.

I signed up for a bunch of em about a week after the waitlist came out when I had no 30 series card and then went back and filled in more entries with the 3060 I think around December. I just got my first notification to buy an AIO watercooled 3090 on July 8th. 24G-P5-3988-KR Pass :p

Funny you should say that...I once saw a crypto mining rig of four GPUs on the site a few months ago, selling as "computer gaming parts", with half the rig showing fire damage. "Unable to test" was part of the descriptor. Yeah, when a POS cryto mining rig is that heavily damaged, no wonder you can't test it.
