  • If you're handing over the reigns, you want a type-O personality.
  • it's the same guy, they just pushed his head down and chin up.

  • How the hell is he going to deal with four proper seasons (not the landscaping company) when he comes from Phoenix?
  • I give him till the 1st 4 game losing streak of the Ealges or Ben Simmons says something about Philly fan that causes Dominick from Manayunk to launch so many dog whistles that the new guy ears bleed
  • So they're becoming like WEEI in Boston? Irrelevant.

    /98.5 is so much better

It was easy for him in Phoenix because he had the only full-powered FM sports station in town with most of the sports teams. Their claim to fame is that the station doesn't take calls during their weekday shows, just the highly-screened post-game shows.

Philly sports fans won't take neutered sports talk. This might be the time for 97.5 to eat WIP's lunch.

That's just never gonna happen. 97.5 has only ever had great success in the afternoon drive slot and now even that show lags behind WIP. Their real opportunity may come when Angelo retires from mornings but even then I have my doubts.

God sports talk radio is so ducking stupid but I still wade my toe into the waters from time to time. It can at least be somewhat entertaining, which is more than I can say for conservative radio.

We'll see if he has some actual programming chops, or if he was just coasting in Phoenix because he didn't have any real competition to worry about.

Yeah, that might be the big thing for him. For those outside of Phoenix; his station has the Suns, Cardinals, Diamondbacks, Arizona State football & men's basketball, and for a couple of seasons; the Coyotes (they have an AM station for ESPN Radio and a FM news/talk station that they could shuffle games off to when needed). That station is the literal 800 pound gorilla of Phoenix sports radio. It's been said that the other sports stations in Phoenix have hosts that are there only because they bring sponsors with them.

I get a feeling he'll be eaten alive in Philly.
  • I've said it before, I'll say it again: WIP and the sports talk culture is a cancer in Philly. You don't even realize how toxic it really is until you move out of town and realize - no, it's not like that everywhere, and no, that doesn't mean Philly is somehow better.

You're right. 910 used to be decent, now they have the guys who do their show from a car dealership everyday. 1060 is mostly National, and 1580-who knows what they're doing-they have no sales staff. They can't even sell an ad to a sports betting book, and that should be an easy sale for even the lowest rated sports station.

So, this guy is moving to a bigger station because he was running the show at a station who's competition is barely noticeable. And I bet WIP interviewed guys who were more qualified.
