Virtua Fighter, Shenmue, Yakuza, or Streets of Rage for more "serious" entries, with Sonic, Toejam & Earl, or even stuff like Space Channel 5 for goofier entries? Yeah, I can actually see this kind of working.

Hmmmm... Maybe some of the characters from Golden Axe, or Eternal Champions. /Gilius Thunderhead's head butt (double tap forward then punch button)
State_College_Arsonist:Adding the character from Splatterhouse might work, just give him a shotgun or 2x4.

Mega Steve:Throw some Altered Beast guys in there! Played the crap out of that back in the day
Ooh, those are some good suggestions. I was skeptical at first, but now I'm kind of liking the sound of this. The challenge in coming up with this roster is trying to remember which IPs Sega actually owns, rather than just publishing.
Maybe an entry from the Wonder Boy franchise? Probably either 3 or 4. 3 would let them incorporate monster forms, while 4 would add a female character to the roster and let her do attacks with her companion creature.
Ah. I always thought all the games used the same one and only Megaman. Seems like a dumb idea not to. Like saying every Mario or every Link is an entirely different character who just happens to look the same, have the same name, and be functionally the same, albeit with a few new features and/or functions.
Gnaglor:Glorious Golden Ass: Gnaglor: Why are there two Megaman in the picture?
Megaman and Megaman X.

Isn't megaman a robot?
I like to imagine him as a RoboCop. He and the villain robots were once human but after a mining accident, their brains were used in robot bodies and supposedly wiped of memories. Every so often, flashes of their former lives come back to them and they find themselves staring at the horizon from a rooftop before they are given instructions to go kill again.
