Of course they need cities. Who will buy the food and the axles? Who makes the fuel? Last I checked, the refineries are in Houston, New Orleans, New Jersey, and Los Angeles.

So, you should logically encourage the millions and millions of townies and city dwellers to preserve more of that Permian Stink Juice for future Important Rural Needs by taking transit and living efficiently, rather than driving the old Expedition to soccer practices and Walmart. That's just the tip (giggle). Cities are the centers that create technology, the centers of entertainment, publication and arts creation, (this is currently a bad example but) the centers of the rule of law and civilization, the center of the economic engines, the center of scientific and medical advancements. Etc etc.
If you think you'd be happy plowing fields 16 hours a day behind a mule just to die at 30 from disease or starvation. Then sure. F#ck cities.

The issue isn't the rural population. It's the suburban population who need a big plot of land to build a McMansion, drive 20+ minutes to anything and NIMBY anything that might take away anything from the above.
Also, the public policy in the last 70 years has been driven to cater to the suburban population at the cost of the urban population. Highways cutting through cities, higher density housing eliminated so that large parking lots can fill up valuable space and cutting funding to public transport/walkable solutions because people can just buy a car.

However, the same people who are giddy about high gas prices forcing people to use mass transit or buy electric vehicles seem to forget that pretty much ALL FARM EQUIPMENT runs on diesel. Super high diesel prices are going to cause massive food price increases.
The upcoming food crisis looks biblical in proportions.

icebergcomics: We did the math. If we made coffee at home, instead of picking up at starbucks, we could continue to drive both of our vehicles into our same-location office/salon space thus continuing our autonomy and not shifting our budget. I like the home-brewed better anyway.

It's not so much the diesel, but the natural gas which produces fertilizer from ammonia via the Haber-Bosch process.
But I'm not worried about that causing a famine. High prices for fuel will curtail a lot of demand long before it curtails food demand.
I'm not seeing evidence of any curtailed demand anyway. Everyone is biatching about prices, but traffic is as bad as ever.
