  • Today is my Friday. What a lovely way to start the weekend! Thanks, Subby!
  • That was great, thanks for sharing.
    And f@ck cancer
  • I have no medical qualifications but perhaps some farkers here do and can tell me: if he had that very, early and isolated form of cancer which was neatly cut out off him, how come his prognosis is 10 years?

    I mean he's 79 - 10 years is pretty good.

Having said that, cancers can come back and sometimes it's very difficult to get every single cancer cell, even with drugs, surgery, all that. That might be why.

Cancer is typically caused by a mutation in a gene that deactivates a cell's ability to undergo apoptosis (cell death), thus resulting in unchecked reproduction.  If his particular genome is capable of mutating in such a way as to result in pancreatic cancer, then it probably has a higher chance of doing so again than would typically be the case.

Also, he's already 79 years old...
  • Too bad the article couldn't survive a paywall.
  • Kenny killed one my BILs, the bastard.

  • Why don't we ever hear the stories of the town bully developing aggressive terminal cancer --- the man who relentlessly belittled his children, abused his wife, wouldn't pay for veterinary care for the family dog and ripped off customers in whatever line of business he was in --- so that we can smile tersely at cancer and say, "OK. This time."
  • He caught it at about the same stage as Steve Jobs, but Steve insisted on trying natural remedies first. By the time Jobs realized the natural remedies were junk, it was too late.

Pancreatic cancer is also VERY aggressive and hard to spot early. It's typically in single digits for survival rate.
  • "They could find no further trace in my body. I had been a dead man walking. I am going to live.

    Only then do I cry."

And that's when the room got all dusty over here.

My brother was diagnosed in March, passed away in October. Not fun.
  • I rarely read stories like this to the end.  This one I did.  I even clicked on the "donate to SU2C" link.  But the fear of being relentlessly spammed with emails for the rest of my life deterred me.  I wish I were a better man.

  • Wait--why would they need Eric Idle to fly all the way across the ocean to put on a costume that covers his head?
