The game industry folks love their jobs. I like mine, too, even if it's in a different industry. And they're getting screwed as hard as people in my racket are. Lots of people gonna be bailing from Blizzard, the minute some other company offers a marginally better deal.
I do have a question for anyone who knows more than I do, though: How do work visas and the fear of losing work play into this?
sinko swimo:quit and work elsewhere. they don't own you.
Yeah, why should you try to change the way employers treat you, when you could just roll the dice and hope to find a job in the same industry that famously treats employees poorly.

Well, that's when you form your own gaming company! With hookers and blackjack!
This one really baffles me. It's not even that employees were against unionizing, it's that they got sad and gave up? The reporting on this has been really poor, so I can't fathom how A leads to B. Did the CEO promise everybody ponies or something? It can't possibly be like he gave them all the sad puppy dog eyes and they decided it was just too mean to organize.
Hell, when they tried that with us back at AWS, we just organized harder. What changed?

Despite it's flaws, Marx had it exactly right when he argued that there's an inherent antagonism between the owning class and the working class. I also love my industry and being able to work in it, but I wish more people would realize the bosses have, and are always going to have, an enormous incentive to not act in our interests.

Saying they're pro-worker is just a straight up lie. You know who is pro-worker? Businesses that encourage their employees to unionize.
In civilized countries, unions are a celebrated part of the economic fabric.
"Like many founders, he took the workers' concerns as a personal attack and held a series of meetings that demoralized and disempowered the group, making a free and fair election impossible."

For sure, but it helps that workers in places like France start rioting the second someone threatens to take their protections go away.
Fart And Smunny:Kuroshin: It's not even that employees were against unionizing, it's that they got sad and gave up?
They got intimidated and gave up (for now).
Knowing the way many businesses work as far as trying to make sure unions don't get a foothold, it was probably a mixture of threats of termination of employment and also threats of being blackballed from the field.
Those are two pretty big reasons why people can be talked out of unionizing, and businesses use it regularly.

Yeah - I was just uncomfortable with the phrasing of 'they got sad.' - It isn't sadness. It's fear.
