Because a substantial portion of the US voting public consistently believe that their ignorance is as good as actual experts' knowledge. They go around saying shiat like "do your own research!" while failing to realize that they're completely incapable of telling good sources of information from bad. A "good" source is whatever agrees with their preconceptions. They believe whatever propaganda right wing media spews, and right wing media, run by people utterly devoid of even the tiniest hint of good moral fiber, spews a hell of a lot of bullshiat propaganda.
The long term solution is probably better education in critical thinking and media literacy, but these farks are doing everything they can to keep worthwhile education from happening and ensuring that the next generation is as ignorant as they are.
Yeah, a large portion of the US population operates on "...well all I know is... <stupid generational falsehood or overly simplistic observation>" As long as people are kept uneducated fools, they'll continue not understanding the value of education, and not listening to actual experts who've done actual research.
I have actually had people say to me, "Well, you know better than I do. You are better read. But I still believe [this ridiculous already debunked concept]".
So what you say is true. It's actually worse than people realize. They would rather stay in their "convenient truth" lane, than admit that they are wrong.
Also, it must be said that entirely too many people act on what they believe rather than what is true. I will never understand how they mean the exact same thing to so many people.

Why would they do that?
No two columns in the chart contain the same number of years, and none are one decade.
It starts with:
0-17
18-29
This makes total sense. 18 is widely recognized as legal adult age. You put minors in one category, start at 18 (adults) go to the end of the next decade of ages 29
Then you've got:
30-39
40-49
50-64
There's no logical reason to go from 50-64 here. You've already started the precedent of stopping on a 9 (except for above mentioned adult/minor cutoff). So why go to 64 here?
Maybe it's going to do 15 year increments from here on out? Nope. Next cutoff stops at 74, back to 10 year cutoff.These groupings are dumb and make zero sense.

Because this is how you lie with statistics. It's how you make the numbers tell whatever story you want told.
Instead of making the age groups logical and uniform and letting the viewer draw their own conclusions
