\ KSP nerfed the hell out of this engine compared to NERVA
\\ Because 841isps at 246kN thrust is b0rken and how.
  • FTFA: "the design allows for a nuclear facility that's around a third the size of a standard reactor. Each module is capable of producing around 50 megawatts of power."

Keep reducing the size and we are well on our way to fusion core powered generators and automobiles.  Might be in time for the resource wars of 2070 - come on Power Armor and Plasma Rifles!!

You have to install the Interstellar mod set to get the really good engines.

/The Rocinante/Kerbstein engine is hella fun
//The game takes forever to load with these mods installed
///But the Kerbstein engine is hella fun

I liked the Daedalus, the fusion engine that was so large that the only way to launch it was to fly it straight up to about 300km, ditch the booster, turn sideways and burn the fusion engine to get orbital velocity.

Meganewtons of thrust, hundreds of thousands of seconds of specific impulse, Delta-V of about 300,000km/sec.

The fuel was a bit pricey, though...pure HE3.

I'm trying to remember if it's possible to mine He3 from the Mun in Interstellar. If it is, then you just have to run a bunch of mining missions from the Mun to the Daedalus craft, and you'd only be spending whatever it took to launch the Daedalus and the mining craft.

I believe yes, but I used solar collectors in low kerbol orbit (you need to use the Persistent Rotation mod or they'd not stay pointed correctly.)

This is true....but basically every other KSP stock engine is useless under RSS/RealismMod.

I did love how the KSP community was "This is too easy!" and made the Realism mods.
  • My go-to with the Nerva engine in KSP is to double the stock ISP, decrease the thrust by 50%, and increase the heat production to about 250% of stock.

Mainly it's because in the real world nuclear engines outperform chemical engines by such a ridiculous margin that literally nobody would use chemical if they had a choice. There aren't a lot of ways to simulate political opposition and environmental concern in a game with no NPCs, though.

Love it with the radio link control, reentry heat, life support, and MechJeb mods at a minimum.   I never did get RSS working.

It still needs a defined campaign mode and a system randomiser.

In KSP, the stock world is MUCH simpler in terms of Delta-V - while Kerbin (your home planet) has 1 g of gravity, it's tiny - a radius at the equator to 600km, not Earth's 6,371km. This means 1) The density of Kerbol is off the chart, but 2) the atmosphere ends around 70km attitude and orbital velocity is 2.2km/sec, not the nearly 10km/sec of earth.

So, the KSP engines are basically all OP compared to the real world. They nerfed their version of the NERVA to make sure that you'd use engines in a rational way, otherwise, yeah, you'd put three NERVs on the first stage, one on the second and go anywhere.

This would break the fundamental rule of the game - MOAR BOOSTERS!
