  • Headline: "Oh noes, they're going to ban your favorite junk food!!"
Reality: They're going to make the manufacturer use non cancer causing ingredients.

    The horror.
  • Yes, these foods cannot possibly be reformulated to remove the toxins.
  • So the EU has already banned them. So the companies presumably already have versions that would work.

But they just keep giving the US the cancer causing versions because....they can?

Not "because they can", but because it's profitable. The cancer crap is cheaper by a fraction of a penny so they use it.
Remember: Capitalist ethics says your only responsibility is to the shareholders. If it were legal and profitable to feed people to woodchippers, the ethical capitalist company would be rounding up homeless by the truck load.
  • I can understand candy having bad things, but soup?
  • I'm amused by the Hot Tamales being "on the chopping block"... I remember those being around when i was a kid.  THEY'VE BEEN TRYING TO KILL US FOREVER.
  • Please do this.  It's embarrasing that we're eating foods that have been banned in the EU for toxicity.

No, the ethical company would be selling tickets to go reenact your favorite scene in Fargo. Those movie fantasy camps are good business.
  • Proof positive the USA government doesn't give a damn if you live or die. Vote these mongrels out of office and get someone that's competent for once.

Despite what may be parroted here by a nameless farker, the EU brings a LOT of benefits to it's citizens.

/I hope your application goes well and you get the same protections soon

  • Those food colorations can EASILY be replaced... and have been in much of the world.  The worst penalty?  Less extreme coloration.

Do you ACTUALLY care if your Skittles are more pastelly red, yellow or blue than bright red, yellow or blue?   Really?

Ever have a soda from eu?  They have this little tinfoil to prevent rats piss and poop from going on the cans.

    Why isn't that I America?

Sure they can reformulate them or maybe use formulations that they already use in Europe. They don't because the ingredients to make them safe may add a fraction of a cent per unit to their cost. When you're pumping out millions or tens of millions of units a day, those fractions of a cent add up.

If making them here the same way they already do there, was cheaper, they'd already be doing it.
Also, the replacement dyes and other ingredients they use over there may not be approved for use here.

Of course I don't know any of this to be fact. Most likely it's just about money.
  • I worked in retail for awhile so I'd seen a shiatton of cardboard boxes in my time. Pretty sure every material known to man is also known to the state of California to cause cancer.

    I know.... knew.
    :(
  • That article is shiatty to read. Here is my condensed version.

    1. brominated vegetable oil is gross. When they started adding it to Crush side I stopped drinking it. It has been linked to the development of chronic headaches, memory loss and impaired balance
    2. potassium bromate is a strong oxidizing agent. You know how we are always told to eat antioxidants, yeah, this  shiat can irritate the lungs. Repeated exposure may affect the nervous system causing headache, irritability, impaired thinking and personality changes. huh? Well that might explain somethings about Americans

    3. Titanium dioxide builds up in your system which puts people at risk of intestinal inflammation, immune system damage and cancer.

4.dye Red 3, is already banned from use in cosmetic products in America. In my life I've come to learn, most red food dyes are evil. This one: can cause cancer in laboratory animals in very high doses, cause genotoxicity - when the DNA suffers toxic damage - and causes permanent transmissible changes to strains, and has been linked to behavioral issues in children (which I repeat on Fark all the time and no one ever wants to hear it)

    5. Propylparaben aka why wonder bread never goes bad. It is banned in the EU, Canada and Brazil etc for its links to the development of thyroid and kidney cancer.

Ever need proof corporations are morally devoid unethical organizations, here you go. They will continue to sell you cheaper poison EVEN when they use the more expensive less poisonous stuff in other countries already.

The long term cost of slightly more expensive minor ingredients isn't really the big reason.  The main problem is that switching over will cost money up front and might impact next quarter's report, MBA holders can't do that.

Goes both ways.  One of my favorite potent potables is banned in the US because the FDA doesn't like one of the ingredients.

/have to get the good stuff from Poland
  • I'm sensing a new Smokey and The Bandit reboot. Some tech bro bets the hero he can't bring a truckload of Skittles from Denver to SF in 16 hours.

Now's the time to start a food factory in FL that only produces food with those ingredients and sell them to people who'll eat them for stigginit purposes

If somebody takes up that challenge, he better not be drinking any iced tea.
