  • There is nothing intrinsic about the value of those sneakers; it is purely subjective. That's why they are being sold at auction: to fetch the highest price possible from some jackass with more money than sense.

Don't get me wrong, Jordan is an amazing athlete and has MANY athletic accomplishments to be proud of*. I just take issue with the fact some idiot will pay 7 figures for a dusty pair of 27 year-old sneaks.

    / *Except switching to baseball.
// That went about as well as me auditioning for the Chippendale's when I was 415 pounds.
// Laughter, laughter everywhere. And growing disgust.

They're probably in pretty good condition, and if you wear the same size they likely have a good amount of use in them.

At a thrift store a pair of lightly used sneakers would probably go for $15.
  • I still miss the old Windows Phone "live tile" menu screen.

Yeah, I said it. Do something.

Somehow, I don't think smitty was referring to the price they would fetch at Macklemore's favourite thrift store (which closed almost 8 years ago, btw). With an expected price tag of more than 40,000 Benjamins I think the only uses they will see will be display item, status symbol, and costume for VERY awkward sex roleplay.

/ Yes, I did use to live in Seattle.
    // Big whoop.

I worked at Microsoft when Windows Phone died. I liked the live tile system as well. I tried pushing the folks on the surviving mobile team to port it to Android. Unfortunately they released a pretty generic Launcher instead.

    Rat bastards.

FTFY: The intrinsic value ofamount people are willing to pay for Michael Jordan's game worn gear is just crazy

  • 13s aren't even a good model.

    /At me
  • I don't understand how we're supposed to root for Nike in this new Air Jordan movie.

The second one is simply wrong. It literally contradicts itself as the intrinsic value is the value of the object as the physical object regardless of anything else around it. The intrinsic value of a game-worn Michael Jordan jersey from 1998 would be the same value as a random, lightly used and well stored, twenty-five year old basketball jersey.

The market value is what people are willing to pay and, in cases like this, has nothing to do with the intrinsic value.

As a more sane example, if a plain (unbranded) cotton t-shirt costs $10, that would be the intrinsic value because that is its only value. If that same t-shirt gets a logo added to it and now people are willing to pay $20, its intrinsic value is still $10 because that is what it is worth purely as a t-shirt.

They were once an upstart too. NIke was known more for track shoes back then, while Converse and Adidas dominated the basketball market. MJ was a good prospect following college but no one knew how dominant he'd begin his NBA career and so he was just considered another athlete in the marketing shuffle.

Jordan didn't even want to visit Nike's HQ, but his mom made him take the flight and they were blown away at how personalized their presentation was. Nike was the only company willing to give MJ his own line, rather than just a signature model.

No, it may not be "moving" or "inspirational" but it's a neat story considering how ubiquitous the brand is now.
  • I know it's a little judgmental of me, but when I see an adult human wearing Air Jordans I assume that person is a total dipsh*t.

Will the new movie show the Chinese sweatshop slaves making Air Jordans?

I once had a job where I needed black sneakers.  All I could find at the mall in size 14 was a pair of jordans.  They weren't much of a shoe at all.  I never understood the insane hype.
