  • Make your case to people who are able to effect change -- at times when they are listening, and using language that will convince, not alienate, them. Such an approach will not improve things as quickly as you want, but it will do so more quickly than arguing over whose injustice is the worst.

Can we post this to the top of the PolTab?

  • when I'm going about, I pick up plastic bottles on the street and put them in recycling.
Not all the time obviously- cos I can't do much else til I've washed my hands.

but, eg 2-3 times a week i walk to the little Sainsburys on Clapham road for ice, coffee, catfood, whatever... and I always do it on the way back.

on that walk, usually I pick up at least 10, often more.  and I do it at other times as well.

I calculated, (even rounding down) i must have put getting on for 7,000 'extra' plastic bottles into recycling by now.

obviously, a invisible speck against the rising international tide of plastic, but it makes me minutely feel better.
  • anyway, on the actual subject of the article, rather than me announcing how great I am...
anyone who isn't recycling or taking reusable bags to the supermarket etc these days, is doing so wilfully.  they just don't care.  save your breath.

I'm mad that they got rid of the plastic bags at the supermarket.  I use those when I clean the cat's litter box.  I thought about putting the cat poop and pee clumps in a box and mailing it to elected officials for also punishing us that don't litter, but I'd probably get in trouble.

I mean... that's fine advice, but it's easier said than done. No matter how well thought-out your message is, there's always a chance someone could misunderstand it. And you KNOW that happens in the pol tab all the time.

occasionally people say something, (nice!) grateful or supportive.  always women.  there's potentially an ethnicity trend as well, but sample size is small, and there's other selection bias...

What do you need the bag for if you have a box?

Use produce or bulk food bags. Unless your town are f*cked up and don't allow you to have a bag to put loose items in.

Lock em up they can eat each other
  • I see people with shopping carts full of small bottles of water.  We have good tap water here, too.
  • A plastics trifecta is in play, excitement builds.
  • Billy Bathsalt: I see people with shopping carts full of small bottles of water.  We have good tap water here, too.

Earlier this year, I bought a huge case of small water bottles. I worked at a place that had one water fountain for over 300 people. The fountain frequently didn't work at all. When it did work, it dispensed water that was luke warm to hot. In theory, everyone was encouraged to bring a refillable water bottle, but getting decent water to fill that bottle with was nigh impossible. The drink machines routinely stole money. Even when they worked, the water sold out first. So, I bought small bottles of water dropped one or two in my lunch container with an ice pack each day. Even without refrigeration, they were still cooler and tasted significantly less foul than water from the fountain - when the fountain would produce water. Some of the people you see buying those water bottles may work under similar conditions or they may be buying water for a sports team or a classroom.
