There's a few, it's true. But Pennsylvania has some of the smartest people in the world at universities like CMU. They had a self driving car that could do the cannonball run in 2002.
Also, don't underestimate rednecks. I met a kid in high school at a science event. West Virginia. His hobbies were hunting and off-roading, and doing complicated trig proofs when he couldn't do the first two. He's probably been designing robots or something for the last 20 years.

It's a pretty old story. I heard it on a bus down in Scranton from an old man who said "Boy," he said, "Boy, that sure must've been something. Just imagine thirty thousand pounds of bananas. Yes, there were thirty thousand pounds of mashed bananas."
