    Um... GUYS?

Irainian Air Force to start Gulf manoeuvres (new window).

I can't help but think this is not the best time for this...

Awesome idea fellows. Lets provoke a shooting war with the US. I really really hope that naval and air forces are being given strict instructions to hold their fire as long as possible. I would be very surprised if they're stupid enough to actually pull the trigger and attack an American plane or ship. They're trying to provoke us to shoot first.

Though to be honest, I say let them fly their manuevers and keep out of the way if at all possible. Burns jet fuel and a national strike will deprive them of resupply at anything but vastly inflated crisis prices.

    doubtful.

I'm not pro-Ahmadinejad, but why is that doubtful? Are official records recording otherwise or is it just a case that we don't want to see the guy we don't like win?

I believe what is bringing the elections into question is the fact that the numbers are off (and I can't remember by how much - haven't had a full cup of coffee yet this morning) with respect to (a) the number of ballots cast in certain areas vs. the actual number of people living in those areas, (b) the amount of time it took them to count millions of votes (eg., it was done in an unimaginably short amount of time), and (c) the skewed vote results in what was the most hotly and closely contested election in post-revolution era Iran.

I actually agree with him. He won the election and got a mandate JUST LIKE BUSH DID...

/I know, feeding trolls, blah blah...joke was too good to pass up.

They claim they managed to hand count 36 million ballots faster than the US manages to tally electronic ballots.

they counted over 30 million paper ballots in under 3 hours.

the guy that lost, lost in his own hometown in a landslide. The government is so arrogant they made no effort to even appear to actually count the ballots.

Isn't that an overstatement? And I believe he was being obviously facetious.
  • PartTimeBuddha: FredaDeStilleto: @austinheap: *PERSONALLY CONFIRMED FROM #IRAN* Tanks have rolled in Tehran #iranelection less than 20 seconds ago from web

    Ooops (if true).

THIS IS WHY THE 2ND AMENDMENT WAS PENNED.

Other countries don't have this protection. Even the US doesn't anymore(1). Especially with "assault" weapon bans that include superficial characteristics like "thumbhole stocks" - let alone heavy hardware like TOW missiles and RPGs - (1)how the hell do you think the Iranian people can stop things like TANKS?

It's like that damn bombing of the tomb of the first Ayatollah - where the hell are law-abiding Iranian people supposed to GET high explosives? It's completely a government-planned shill. If protesters did it, it would have been a molotov-cocktail or a dumpster fire!

It's not the possibility of vehicle loss that is stopping the Iranian military from using the tanks. It's the simple fact if they start razing neighborhoods, they'll get their own personal version of the Hezbollah that is anti-Khameinei.

Plus, they could just do what China did at Tienanmen. Massive government crackdown, tanks ho, and just keep killing until people stop protesting. The international community didn't do a damn thing about that. Tienanmen became a textbook example of how to suppress a protest. Don't think Iran won't try to emulate that.

It can't be said for certain at this stage. What we can say is that it's fishy, and that the behaviour of the regime -- eg. comms blackout, killing people -- would seem to be an odd way to represent to the world (and nationally) that they're all "Look! We haz decomocratic!"
  • I am very sorry to say it seems like if the Iranian people really want change they are going to have to start violently fighting back at against their oppressors. Those in power who have warped Islam into something it's not just so they can stay in power are not going to leave quietly.

/God bless each of you fighting for your freedoms. I hope you come out of this safely.

Except you actively SOUGHT OUT the video, both of you, making you voyeurs at best, no? Morbid, sick curiosity masked as humanitarian concern?

    yeah this...

some areas had 140% voter turnout.

Leave this to the other threads for now.
We can (and will) argue about it later.

That's a huge part of it, and the suckiest part. Tends to make the moment stick a bit more. I think a lot of the people here are feeling that sense of helplessness, as well as identification with Neda.

Only signifies how helpless to help a lot of us are in different parts of the world. And that is why this video did hit so hard.

That makes it worse. So many people want to help. They may not only know not how to help, but seeing that throws that helplessness into sharp relief. But we are helping in our own small way, even if we don't know how to set up proxies or get the info. We are bearing witness. If we don't do it, all will be for naught.
  • I'm an Egyptian!: One thing that I wrote in the other thread (and got yelled at for making people cry, sorry) is how we're looking at the event. Neda's death was horror, but in that horror is beauty. Think of it this way. We witnessed the loss of a young life, but we saw complete strangers recognize the worth of her life. In recognizing this, she did not die alone. Not only did she bring together strangers at the scene, but she has united us from around the world. She has given us an incredible gift, one that we should honor.

    THIS. A thousand times this.
  • wolvernova: Black Moses: i'm really sick of seeing this perpetual Iran thread

What are you people talking about? Of COURSE they counted all the votes! They went above and beyond the call of duty and counted well past 100% of the reporting votes in some districts!

/Seriously, over 100% turnout in several voting districts.
/Not about the election anymore, people...get up to date.
