How can a professional sports team be taken seriously with a name like "Red Wings". Might as well start a new expansion team called the Dirty Sanchez or Cleveland Steamers.
I kinda like the old fart. Yeah, he's slowed down quite a bit from his prime, but he was a good guy to have around as a mentor for the young defensive core. I guess Lidstrom fills that role too, but Chelios is a vet among vets.
/I used to play hockey at the rink he skated at when he was living in San Diego //Of course, I was an infant when he lived here, so WTF do I know?
That's too bad. I completely understand his wanting to play another year but I also understand Detroit's not wanting him any longer. He probably should have taken the opportunity to go out on top (announce retirement right after skating with The Cup) rather than not having another contract offered.
What he really needs is a younger team that wants him around as a mentor, etc & is willing to give him another year or two.

or the Cincinnati Bow Ties!
The Atlanta Hot Pockets? Look it up. It's nasty. I always liked Chelios despite the whole playing for Detroit thing.
Personally, I hope that when he realizes that his career is over, he signs a 1-day contract with the Blackhawks and retires as a Hawk. He broke our hearts when he signed with the Wings, but in hindsight I can see the logic in that move since the Hawks of the late '90s were going nowhere. The Hawks are going places now, but I'm not sure if he'd be of any use to them now (even in spite of Campbell's pucking idiocy in the playoffs).
/go Hawks! //submitter ///the Holy Grail reference was the first thing I thought of after hearing the news this afternoon
I wouldn't mind seeing the leafs pick him up. Burke wants him for team USA in the olympics in a non-playing capacity, I think he would do wonders working with schenn in toronto, just as a mentor.

Dollar Bill traded him after they didn't want to give him a contract extension, feeling he was "washed up." I think they were able to get a sack of used pucks for him.
/same deal they got for Belfour and Roenick //Hope he retires as a Hawk as well.

Anders Eriksson, and two first round draft picks. I think the Wings got the better part of the deal there.
I actually wouldn't mind seeing that. I would've preferred that he just hung up the skates now, but if he wants to keep playing, a return to Chicago seems like a nice way to eke out another season.

That said, I'm still a little sad to see him go. I didn't expect it back in '99, but he's grown on me a lot.
unyon: Even though he's 47, I still always thought that Chelios' career would end after he lost an eye in a barfight.
There's still time for that.

You can't see the back of it, but that should be a Chelios sweater he's wearing.
