  • TFA: The rules included but were not limited to: not being allowed to attend sleepovers, have play dates, participate in school plays, complain about not being able to do school plays, get anything less than an A, play any instrument other than the piano or violin, or opt out of playing the piano or violin.

lets hope she doesn't get murdered by the first Craigslist weirdo that shows her some attention.

  • what_now: Having worked with quite a few of those students, I can tell you this girl will fall into one of two categories:

    1) An obsessive studier who has no social life, and therefore fails to make the type of connections college is for

    2) A girl who bangs the whole crew team while snorting any substance you put in front of her.

Helicoptering your children is a good way to get farked up children.

Please be 2, please be 2, please be 2.

Should apply to Harvard grad school....
  • Bravo for the headline, subby. Will the phone call be in a ching-chong language?
  • Marmanukem: It just remains to be seen if her daughter can function as a normal human being after such treatment.

She's Asian and going to Harvard; there will be absolutely no point in her life where she'll need to function as a normal human being.
  • this is not a sign of good parenting skills. she was destined to go to harvard, because her parents are wealthy and also went to harvard.
now if her parents were broke-asses that were smuggled into the country boat and somehow managed to escape the snakehead that forced them into slavery, but through hard work and perseverance managed to scrape together enough money to send their daughter to an ivy league school, then congratulations are in order.
this is just an example of rich crazy lady sending her rich kids to a rich people school.
  • Marysue: Meh, if you call getting into a safety school an 'accomplishment'.

  • saxchick: She's a "Legacy Admit." It happens all the time.

She had to graduate from high school, and be breathing, to make it into Harvard. Hell, George W. Bush got in as a Legacy at Yale. How tough can it be?

Now, if she were going to MIT, or Standford, or Rice, I'd be more impressed. Hell, I'd be more impressed if she got into the University of Michigan.

And I still don't get the "you must learn Violin or Piano" crap. Great violinists and pianists are a dime a dozen. There's a hell of a lot more demand for good bassoonists and tuba players.

  • bidness: I'm all for affirmative action if it means whites have a reserved quota at places like UCLA and UC Berkeley.

This is what would happen to all the top colleges in the US if affirmative action was actually completely overturned. Somehow, I don't think the "reverse racism"-screaming College Republicans have thought their cunning plan all the way through.
  • it would be more news if she didn't make it to harvard.
  • How does this prove anything? Unless every kid at Harvard had an overbearing, unbelievably strict parent then as far as we know this could just be a fluke, and the only one. Is every single child from an overbearing, strict family at top universities? No. Have some kids from strict families failed before even leaving high school? Yes.

Granted I missed the original piece she wrote so I have no strong feelings one way or the other.

I think the idea is more discipline building than anything else. It's damn hard to master an instrument (heh) and being able to play one well not only demonstrates on a superficial level that one has the will, drive and discipline to fine-tune one's skills, it also indicates faux-class that Asians seem to love to strive for socially.

  • She'd be better off spending four years taking buffoon lessons at Clown College....
  • Dr.Gonzo7719: Excellent. She can join the other useless Harvard assholes who've run this country into the ground.

And what do you do to make this country a better place?
  • la_cyberchicana: If she's anything like other kids with overbearing parents I've known who grew up in demanding, restrictive, high-stress environments, she'll be fall-down drunk within three hours of arrival at U, laid by some random dude within the week, and have an STD or unwanted pregnancy within the first semester.

She looks half Asian, those are usually the slutiest.
  • I wonder if the azn students have toned down on their 'talking overtly loud in the library for no good reason' thing or if they just ramped it up a notch in protest?
  • Airfoilsguy: Dr.Gonzo7719: Excellent. She can join the other useless Harvard assholes who've run this country into the ground.

And what do you do to make this country a better place?

In the infamous words of George Carlin: "You show me a guy sitting around all day watching TV and jerking off and I'll show you a guy who's not hurting anybody."

In pure utilitarian terms, who did the most net good to society, Studman69 or David Viniar, CFO of Goldman Sachs?
  • What these Tiger Moms need to realize is that there is really no benefit to going to Harvard if you are not able to connect socially. The biggest benefit of top schools is that there is a huge network of alumni in powerful positions. If she stays as intense in college as she did in high school, she is only going to freak people out.
