Still, this is not doing much for me. I see a lot of people who are pissy they don't get to have a coach (one video I saw on ESPN said it was Joe's last home game - do you think he was retiring next year if he wasn't caught half-heartily accepting a child rapist in his midst?), a lot of people trying to put on a positive face (we can call this Damage Control or "Spin") despite how bad it is, and a few people genuinely upset their school was involved in this.

I think that opinion is a bit harsh... but when the lawyers are done, both on the civil side & the Feds (not the Sgt Schultz Pennsylvania authorities), there probably won't be much left at Penn State.
There's going to be a lot of collateral damage out of this. I can say that it sucks, but how much did the school benefit from the legacy of Paterno, Sandusky, and the PSU football program?

The espn people said it would be about $150 MM; mostly using the Catholic church settlement amounts as a ballpark figure. The problem is for decades you'll have to worry about new people coming forward so you end up keeping funds dedicated for settling these funds instead of devoting them to new buildings and so on.

What I didn't see was a single Penn State person say "Good, I'm glad he's gone, he shouldn't have stayed after this." And that disturbs me, because being outside of their bubble, it feels like no one in there is understanding how freak'n serious this is.
I also saw more of this fake, passive Christianity - praying at midfield, praying on street corners "Oh look how sad we are" bullshat. Fark you, you didn't know any of this and none of it mattered to you, you're just putting on a show because whomever is in charge of you told you to.
Now I'm not an idiot - they shouldn't have canceled the game, they shouldn't have fore-fitted the game, they shouldn't have taken it off the air. They should have just played it, just sans the school prep-rally stuff. I still saw tons of it, and it kind of sickened me. However, it is senior day for thousands of people not involved, it is a day of work for hundreds of people running the stadium and concessions. It is millions in TV revenue. No reason to steal their times and their dollars for no appreciable benefits - it won't make the children who were hurt LESS raped, and it won't make Paterno MORE fired, so just get back to the game. Be humble and stop with the bullshat. It's not your show - it's the game we're here for.
Wow.Just, wow. I can't even come up with any response to that.
It doesn't really help when you don't say what your problem with my statement is.
I'm not trying to help you. You neither deserve nor possess the capacity to benefit from any form of "help" I could provide.

Ken VeryBigLiar: One estimate has the possible suits as taking 15% of their total endowment.
Whoa. Is that just university park or the whole system? In the latter case, that would be over $200M. Not that I disagree, it would be a serious wake up call to every senior university administrator across the country not to let people get away with bullshiat like this. The dumber ones will just start some "sexual harrassment" clinics and required training, but others will shake down the system and get most of the screwballs out. It's far more than will ever happen with the Catholic church. Or congress.

jso2897: saintstryfe: jso2897: saintstryfe: If you want to be kinda sick - go over to NY Times. (new window) They had an opinion thing where two of the four commentators were screaming about this being a good way to start killing college sports. Sad, and pathetic. And just as bad are the "Dont' cancel the season" people - who don't get how serious it is.

I see no problem with his post whatsoever, unless a calm, logical opinion leaves you speechless.

The espn people said it would be about $150 MM; mostly using the Catholic church settlement amounts as a ballpark figure. The problem is for decades you'll have to worry about new people coming forward so you end up keeping funds dedicated for settling these funds instead of devoting them to new buildings and so on.
