  • Wow, a man who is now a Russian MP was actively engaged in treason, handing over information to foreign powers? That's going to have some repercussions, surely?

He's the prime suspect in the murder case, but the Russians won't extradite him. What better way to get back at him than by convincing the Russians that he was committing treason, so that they deal with him.

we're through the rabbit hole now.
  • The Russians dump their toxic waste
Right on top of Litvinenko's grave.
A team of experts say it won't do him no harm.

  • +1 Subby. That made me laugh
  • Was Miles his hamster?
  • that's what happens when you bury your spy in the same spot someone killed a ring-wraith, duh.
  • False, Subby: Polonium-210 is an alpha emitter; alpha particles cannot penetrate much matter, maybe a few cell layers. Most of its radiation is absorbed by his cells, thus its great efficiency at killing him from head to toe. Thus there is little to no exposure to even his casket for the time being, and its 156-day half-life tells me that the activity remaining in his corpse is effectively zero.

  • In other news, coroner doesn't mean medical examiner like some idiots thought it did.

Sorry, I read this thing about the aftermath of the Pearl Harbor attack this morning that has placed my Jimmies in a severely "rustled" status. I'm not kidding: it was just about the worst thing I've read in a while.

  • Slightly OT: Sometimes I wonder about the timing of Chavez' sudden onset of cancer. How hard would it be to slip something radioactive under someone's mattress or under their car seat?
  • Some of the local fauna is mildly disturbing.

An externally-located source could cause cancer over a long time, but one strong enough to do the trick before being discovered would also cause localized radiation burns and tissue death. That would certainly kill someone, but it wouldn't merely manifest as organ cancer. So it could work but it wouldn't be sudden.

Or you could read it this way: with a bit of practical knowledge, someone's crack-pot attempt to start the zombie apocalypse is that much closer to success. I'm just trying to help here.
  • I didn't expect the Spanish intelligence agency.

    Humans suck sometimes. Truly.
  • The part of this story that should be alarming to EVERYONE is that someone was able to safely transport Polonium-210 without detection.

short story. I don't know why I thought the acronym cssb would translate to anyone else but me...
I originally read this in a collection of short stories - except the version I read must have been Americanized because it had grass growing in the shape of a cross at the end.
  • See, there are upsides! Plus, You get that cool shaved-head look without all the maintenance..

Even if Po210 is an alpha emitter, what does it decay into? Is every nuclide in the decay chain also an alpha (and alpha only) emitter?
