Be it tonight or roughly 80 hours from now i'll be able to get this small animal/heat trap off of my face. At this point I don't think I really care who wins (no that's not right, Go Sharks).
/it being 90 degrees, similar levels of humidity & our a/c not working may have something to do with my grumpy attitude //just maybe ///sigh, have a good day all, see you tonight
Parents are fine. They heard the shots and sheltered in place; they did see the perp run by their townhouse window carrying a longarm (which turned out to be a WASR-10, evidently - if a gun is reported to be an "AK-47", then it's a WASR). Cops asked to clear their house, my dad consented only if he could accompany them with video, and they agreed to that. No real fuss.
We had a lengthy conversation yesterday about the incident, and my folks are requesting that I take them to a range sometime and update them on guns. They're both virulently anti-violence/anti-gun to the point of not letting me watch Bambi until I was 10 because of the gun violence (for context: my dad launched Minuteman missiles with the USAF for several years, and was so horrified at what he could do with a turn of a key he went full-peacenik), but they were asking themselves, "if he had wanted to come in their house and shoot both of them, what could they have done about it?" So there was some discussion about the fact that even if they want to get a house gun or two, it's not a magic wand, and they'd be better off upgrading the shiat out of their windows and doors. However, if they want to keep a gun or two at the ready in their home, I'll be happy to take them through a process of finding the right tools for the job with them and arranging a x3/week training schedule for two months, and then a x2/month refresher after that until they're comfortable enough to go to the range and meaningfully practice by themselves. I expect to talk with them again Monday or so after they've had time to think things over. So that's the fallout from that little incident.

OtherLittleGuy: intetesting thought process with your parents.
I'm sorry, which part? How they went full-peacenik? Or the thought process from the conversation re: "what if he'd wanted to come in here?"
And yeah. I generally support firearm ownership, but guns AREN'T Magic Safety Sticks, you have to be in the right mental space for it, and it's a terrible responsibility. If you can't accept the responsibility, and you can't be in the right headspace, then you're more of a danger than a help. The problem, of course, is that most people don't know if they can do those things until after they've already got a gun. I'm not super-concerned about my parents in either of those cases - they ARE both USAF vets - but neither's touched a gun in 40 years and there's the personal commitment to training required if you want to make a meaningful defense of your home.
/I'm trying very hard not to post in the Orlando thread on Main. It'll just lead to anger and biatching about.
