Then she has the big reveal, that she has his 2005 returns, and while he did pay 25%, if not for the alternative minimum tax (which he wants to abolish), his percentage would've dropped to around 3%. A rate that USA fraction of what middle class Americans are paying.

So, if my recollection is right, then the amount he paid under the AMT would still be taxed just t a lower rate. Not the 3% rate though.
/Never paid the AMT but have had to run the numbers both ways a few times. Maybe I'm way off.

I don't get it. She tweeted before the show that she had the 1040 portion of his 2005 return, and people are acting like it was some kind of bait and switch. It isn't her fault if you weren't paying attention.
Also, Colbert had her gestures and mannerisms spot on. He and Rachel should take that show on the road.

I doubt there were a whole lot of conservatives excitedly waiting for Maddow to reveal Trump's tax return, only to find out she was peddling an empty ratings grab. It was anti-Trump people who were let down.

I disagree. She gets to decide how she curates her show and she doesn't want it to be some instant gratification televised buzzfeed global mail nonsense. She wants to inform her viewers, including potentially low education viewers who need more background on topics to understand them.
If you want to make fun of somebody, make fun of that senator from Oklahoma who started rambling incoherently after being informed that the EPA regulated fracking in his state and that there is actual evidence fracking causes earthquakes.
