  • Is the state government going to seize it for "reasons"?

To pay for the Cubs victory parade or something I guess

Depends on how much the winner has earmarked for campaign funds for incumbent politicians I reckon.
  • The lottery is just another hidden tax for schmucks. U have a better chance of being struck by lightning.
  • Ha ha ha! What an idiot. Cash option of 244M? That's only like 160M after taxes Hardly seems worth it.
But I guess they'll probably take it. Just another in a long line of bad decisions that people that play the lottery make.
  • Ah, Chicago. My favorite city to vacation in. Love the museums, the foods. The crime not so much. Took my wife there from Dallas on our first "date", flew her there and home the same day. Still married, coming up on a quarter century. Kids, houses, strokes, botched surgeries, pretty much everything. It's good.
  • TFA didn't mention it but the prize has been building since sometime in April.... So instead of having one winner every 3-4 months, how about splitting up the prize money (once it reaches a certain level) & having 10 winners/drawings. A $36MM ($22MM cash option - $10-14MM after taxes) should be more than enough for the poor dumb schmucks who seem to always be the winners of these to live out their lives/have one hell of a hookers & blow orgy.

    {State politicians} But, but if we did that then there wouldn't be this buying frenzy when it really gets up there & there would be less money for the schoo.... (shiat it's hard to say this with a straight face...) {/state politicians}

To make matters worse, in October they're changing the game so it will cost $2/ticket.  Of course, the odds won't be improving.  I would much rather see 10x as many people get $20 million prizes than an individual getting half-billion dollar jackpots a couple times a year.  Hopefully this winning ticket is an office pool or some other such group of people.
  • I stopped buying lottery tickets because the state wasn't paying out--which is why even with the tax hit it's better to take the cash option and bank it. After all, it's 160 mil you didn't have before, right?

As for Illinois, I actually love it-- and I have lived on both coasts and abroad. The only thing missing is mountains--but you have 4 real seasons and every one of them is gorgeous--beautiful snowy winters, flower-ific springs, not crazy hot summers, beautiful fall foliage. Also if you live in the Chicago 'burbs the police blotter says things like "Lawnmower stolen!" "! Snowman vandalized!!"

The worst part of it is that all the retail places shut at 7 or 8 pm..and close Sundays; so if you work all day it's hard to go do anything but grocery shopping. On the East Coast I could go at 10 to a bookstore and get coffee and read magazines for another hour.

I hope that counseling includes why it's not a good idea to play the lottery.

If you survive the strike you can monetize the video and get paid for TV appearances. A sure win.

A few months ago I read a great book called Money For Mothing. Written by a guy who worked for a company that buys out lotto annuities.

We all probably know most lotto winners go broke a few years after winning. Suppose john wins $2milliion and take annual payouts. After taxes he gets $70k/year for 20 yrs. he quits his job and buys a BMW and thinks he's set. but john is terrible with money, so 4 years later he's broke and overwhelmed with debt and desperate for cash but it's 9 months till his next annuity payment.

In comes this company. John is scheduled to get another $1.1 million over the years, but takes a $200k payout and signs over his future lotto annuities. And two years later he is broke again.

The winner was in Illinois. Did you know there's a WHOLE LOT of Illinois that's not Chicago?
  • I play weekly.. I enjoy it, get little wins frequently..  if I ever get a big win, it will get split with the siblings and I will remodel the house..  might even drive a few hours and meet Drew...  will also TF a bunch of people..

Yup. Too bad the state and Chicago city governments are so dysfunctional. Otherwise, I'd have far fewer complaints. Oh well... Will County isn't too bad, all things considered. On my block, I have good neighbors all around, my town is well-kept and even has a balanced budget, and I'm not waythefarkoutinthemiddleofnowhere. There are awesome bike trails all over the place (and more and more of them are getting hooked together), and some great scenic drives that are doable as day trips. Sometimes the winters can be a drag, but some of that can be attributed to "getting old sucks." Winter was more fun when I was a kid.

If I had to move to Indiana, it'd have to be Dyer/Griffith/Schererville/CrownPoint or such... not quite so much derp in The Region compared to the Holy Hoosier Heartland.
